McGill family trip - By Bridie McGill

Yvonne or Nana as we were lucky enough to call her was such an amazing person. When I was about 8 or 9 my family got to go over to England and since we live in New Zealand this was such a big thing for us. It meant we got to fly across the world, do cool activities and visit our family all at the same time. As soon as we got to Nana and Grampa's in England, Nana walked out of the kitchen in her apron which was covered in flour whilst holding out a tray of scones. She has a huge smile on her face whilst we run up to her giving her a hug without knocking the scones out of her hand. Whilst we were over there we got to go to Nanas guides which she ran. We were lucky enough to spend the whole day making poi to then go to guides and teach everyone some of the New Zealand culture. Nana was so intrigued by it and never gave up even if she couldn't do it after a billion attempts. She also took us to her gymnastics lessons as everyday we would beg her to show us the splits... all three ways! We got to go and watch her teach these kids (and us) how to do all these cool tricks, which would light up every kids face in the room. Seeing that by just walking into a room and everyone immediately starts smiling shows that she was loved and very dear to everyone's hearts. We went around every possible castle in England, telling us the back story of every single one multiple times as we wouldn't listen the first time. We would sit in the lounge watching the squirrels in her garden and the birds on the feeder laughing about how we thought we could go catch one. She showed us her amazing garden which led to a very intense game of tag, running around, laughing and screaming making some of the best memories ever. Whilst we were over there she also showed us what mushy peas were and I can tell you we weren't very fond of it. As we were over there she quickly learnt what little food we did like and what food we didn't, no matter what she would cater for everyone liking and add a desert on the end! I thank her for teaching us amazing life lessons, bringing smiles to our faces and just being an all round caring and kind person that left a big imprint on everyone's lives. Nana may be gone but she will never be forgotten as we are lucky enough to have the best memories with and of her xoxo.
